Following a late-night raid on the Mexican embassy’s Quito offices, the Ecuadorian police apprehended Jorge Glas, a former vice president of Ecuador.
Since December, Glas has been in the embassy seeking political asylum.
As a result, Mexico announced today that it would sever diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Glas served as Ecuador’s vice president under Rafael Correa from 2013 to 2017. Glas is currently the subject of an investigation into claims that he embezzled state cash.
