The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported today, Wednesday, that Ottawa is preparing to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, with an announcement expected in the coming days according to Reuters.

The agency cited multiple sources saying that the details of this action have not been finalized yet.

Opposition legislators have long been urging for the IRGC to be classified as a terrorist organization, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government has so far refrained from taking this step, citing potential unintended consequences.

Canada already classifies the Quds Force, the IRGC’s foreign arm, as a terrorist group, and severed diplomatic relations with Tehran in 2012.
