An Arab diplomat told Agence France-Presse on Wednesday that at least 600 Egyptian pilgrims have died this year during Hajj, primarily due to hot weather. This raises the total death toll to over 900.
The diplomat, who preferred not to be named, indicated that the number of deaths among Egyptian pilgrims has now reached “at least 600,” following an earlier report that cited a minimum of 323 deaths. He noted that “all the new fatalities are due to the heat, and most of them are irregular pilgrims,” referring to individuals who did not possess proper pilgrimage permits.
India, Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have also reported deaths among their citizens who were on pilgrimage. However, many of these authorities did not specify the causes of death.
