Kenyan president backs down on tax hike after bloody protests

Kenyan President William Ruto announced on Wednesday that he has withdrawn the 2024-2025 draft budget, which includes a tax hike.
Ruto said in a speech today following protests that left 22 people dead, that he has listened to the demands of the people and will not sign the Finance Bill being debated by Kenya’s parliament.
This follows a wave of peaceful protests in several states in Kenya yesterday, with protesters in the capital Nairobi storming the parliament building.
Kenyan police forces responded by firing live bullets at the protesters, killing 22 people and injuring about 30 others, according to human rights organisations in Kenya.
