The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq has set 20 October as the date for the sixth round of elections for the region’s parliament.
Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, has issued a decree setting 20 October as the date for the general elections for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament, said Delshad Shihab, spokesman for the Kurdistan Regional Presidency, during a press conference held today in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The elections were postponed and will be held on 18 November 2023 after the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) disagreed on the issues of the electoral law, minority quotas and the activation of the High Electoral Commission (HEC).
The elections were not held on time and were postponed to 25 February 2024 and then to 10 July 2024.
