7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Peru Coast , Tsunami Alert Lifted

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Peru on Friday, with tsunamis expected along some coastlines, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The USGS raised its estimate of the quake’s magnitude shortly after it struck 8.8 kilometres off the coast of Atiquipa.
The USGS warned of dangerous tsunamis up to three metres high along some coastlines.
Peru lies within the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, a vast region of intense seismic activity that runs along the west coast of the Americas and is subject to hundreds of detectable earthquakes each year.
