France: Far-right party leads first round of legislative elections

France’s far-right National Rally party (RNP) came out on top in the first round of the country’s snap parliamentary elections on Sunday, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.

The RN and its allies won 33 per cent of the vote, giving them between 260 and 310 seats in the French National Assembly.

The New Popular Front (the electoral alliance of left-wing parties) won 28.5 per cent of the vote, giving it between 115 and 145 seats in the next National Assembly.

The Centre Alliance led by French President Emmanuel Macron won 22 per cent of the vote, which would give it between 90 and 120 seats in parliament.

The second round of the election, scheduled for 7 July, will determine the final number of deputies in the next parliament.
