Preliminary results from 99.15 per cent of polling stations in Mauritania on Sunday showed President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani winning the 29 June presidential election.

The results, posted on the electoral commission’s website, showed Ghazouani winning a new term in office with more than 56 per cent of the vote.
Ghazwani, a 67-year-old former military man, had more than 66 per cent of the votes counted so far, according to the website of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which publishes election results based on polling stations as they are counted.
Ghazwani, Mauritania’s current president, was running against six opposition candidates.
