Left-wing alliance wins French legislative elections

A coalition of left-wing parties, the New Popular Front, has topped the second round of France’s legislative elections and is expected to win between 175 and 205 seats in the National Assembly.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition came second with 150 to 175 seats, while the far-right party and its allies had only 115 to 150 seats, the institute said in its estimates.

No party will have an absolute majority of 289 seats in France’s 577-seat National Assembly.

The French Interior Ministry said earlier that turnout in the second round of the election was 59.71 per cent, the highest in any election since 1981.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Sunday evening that he would submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, after Macron’s centrist coalition was defeated in the election.
