Syrians vote in parliamentary elections

Syrians in government-controlled areas will go to the polls on Monday to elect members of the People’s Assembly, the fourth such election since the conflict erupted in 2011.

The 8,151 polling stations in government-controlled areas opened at 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT) and will close at 19:00.

A total of 1,516 candidates are vying for 250 seats after more than 7,400 candidates withdrew, according to the Supreme Judicial Election Commission.

The seats are almost equally divided between the workers and farmers sector (127 seats) and the other popular groups (123 seats).
Syria holds parliamentary elections every four years.
