French President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his cabinet on Tuesday and will take over until a new government is formed.
The Elysee Palace said the government would be a “caretaker until a new government is formed” as France hosts the Olympic Games in the coming weeks and struggles to form a coalition. “For this period to end as soon as possible, it is up to the republican forces to work together” to form a coalition, the presidency added.
Last week, the French authorities announced the final results of the snap parliamentary elections, with the left-wing coalition under the banner of the New Popular Front leading the second round results.
The coalition won 182 seats in the French National Assembly, according to the final election results published by the French Interior Ministry.
