Bangladesh ordered a nationwide shutdown of mobile internet on Thursday, Communications Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak said, after student protests against a quota system for government jobs left at least nine people dead.

Authorities in Bangladesh yesterday announced the closure of all universities and ordered students to evacuate buildings immediately for safety reasons.

Students have launched a wave of protests against the quota system amid high unemployment.
