Forest fires put Greece on alert

The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection has declared a general state of alert due to several incidents across the country and prevailing weather conditions such as high temperatures and strong winds.

According to the Greek newspaper Kathmirini all fire services are on high alert.

The newspaper notes that a forest fire has been burning since Wednesday afternoon in the area of Agios Vlassis, in the Peloponnese, towards Epidaurus. The fire, which is burning in a dense pine forest, poses a major challenge and the authorities have issued an emergency alert, urging residents of Sofiko to be careful.

Three firefighters suffered minor burns and were taken to hospital in Corinth. Authorities have closed traffic on the road to Epidaurus.
