The United Nations has called on Bangladesh to provide immediate details of last week’s crackdown on protests and demanded an investigation into the use of live ammunition to kill protesters.
At least 193 people, including several policemen, were killed in last week’s violence, according to AFP, in the country’s worst unrest during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.
The violence erupted after protests over a quota system for certain groups in public jobs, which critics say favours allies of Hasina’s ruling party.
Thousands of army troops are still patrolling the cities, and a widespread internet blackout remains in place.
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inspected the devastation left by days of deadly violence.
