Seven Nigerian soldiers have been killed when a landmine exploded on a motorway in Borno state, the stronghold of the Boko Haram insurgency. According to two local officers.
Officer Shaibu Musa, who works in counter-insurgency, said a military vehicle was travelling on the road between the villages of Monguno and Baga when an improvised explosive device detonated, killing seven soldiers on patrol.
Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, including a long-running Islamist insurgency in the northeast, separatist violence in the southeast, widespread oil theft in the Niger Delta and kidnappings by criminal gangs.
There has been no official comment from the Nigerian military on the incident.
