Algeria withdraws its ambassador to France after Macron supports Morocco’s position on Western Sahara

Algeria decided on Tuesday to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic with immediate effect, following the French authorities’ decision to recognise the Moroccan position of autonomy as the only basis for resolving the Western Sahara conflict.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: ‘The French government has declared its categorical and unequivocal support for the colonial reality imposed on the territory of Western Sahara.

The Algerian government has therefore decided to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic and the Algerian diplomatic mission in France will henceforth be headed by a chargé d’affaires,’ the statement said.
