Tunisia opens nominations for presidential elections

Tunisia’s High Electoral Commission (HEC) began accepting nominations on Monday for the presidential elections scheduled for 6 October.

The head of the commission, Farouk Bouasker, stressed the need for the candidate or his representative to submit a complete candidacy file in accordance with the provisions of the electoral code.
The deadline for submitting candidacies is 11 August.
The electoral commission has tightened the conditions for candidacy, requiring the collection of signatures from 10 members of parliament, 40 heads of local authorities or 10,000 voters (at least 500 signatures in each constituency).
Tunisian President Kais Saied has announced his candidacy for a second term, and a number of political figures and activists have announced their intention to run, including former minister Munther Znaidi and former presidential adviser Kamal Akrout.
