Venezuela: Protests and clashes with police after Maduro declared winner of presidential election.

At least one person was killed in protests and clashes with police in Venezuela yesterday (Monday), shortly after Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner of a third presidential term in an election whose result was rejected by the opposition and questioned by several countries.

Thousands took to the streets in poor neighbourhoods in Caracas on Monday evening, chanting ‘hand over power now’, AFP reported.

The pro-government National Electoral Council yesterday (Monday) declared Maduro the winner of a third six-year term. The opposition refused to accept the result.
Countries including China, Russia, Cuba, Cuba, Nicaragua, Honduras and Bolivia congratulated Maduro, while others, notably the United States, which imposes economic sanctions on Caracas, questioned the result.

Nine Latin American countries called for a ‘full review’ of the presidential election results.
