Bangladesh authorities release student protest leaders

Police in Bangladesh on Thursday released six students who led protests against a quota system for government jobs last month, after their detention sparked controversy in the country.

According to BBC Radio, police detained the leaders of the student protests last week, citing their safety, and said the decision to release them came after legal experts in the country confirmed that the detention of these students was forced and illegal.
Violent student protests against a new quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh have left more than 100 people dead. The decisions include allocating 56 per cent of government jobs to certain groups, including family members of fighters who fought in the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, women, indigenous people and people with disabilities.
