Iran’s new president, Masoud Bazeshkian, has appointed diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif as his deputy for strategic affairs.
The former foreign minister will assist the president on major strategic issues, the official ISNA news agency reported. Prior to this appointment, Zarif served as a senior adviser to the new president.

In his decree, the Iranian president asked Zarif to monitor major domestic and international developments and the extent of the government’s success in achieving the goals set out in the country’s constitution, as well as the extent of success in implementing the 20-year vision document and general policies approved by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and to report directly to the president on the outcome of his work.
Zarif, 64, will serve as Iran’s foreign minister from 2013 to 2021.
