Student leaders on Saturday called for a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience in Bangladesh.
The Students Against Discrimination group, responsible for organising the first protests, urged Bangladeshis to launch a mass non-cooperation movement from tomorrow (Sunday), according to AFP.
A member of the group, Asif Mahmood, said: “This includes not paying taxes, water, electricity and utility bills, striking government employees and stopping foreign remittances through banks.”
The students are demanding a public apology from the Prime Minister for last month’s violence and the sacking of several of her ministers. They have insisted that the government reopen schools and universities across the country that were closed at the height of the unrest.
The protests began last July in response to the reintroduction of job quotas, which left more than 200 people dead in some of the worst unrest of Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.
