Bangladesh army chief expected to speak after 100 killed in anti-government protests.

Bangladesh’s army chief Waqarul Zaman will deliver a speech today (Monday), a military spokesman confirmed to AFP, as student protesters in Bangladesh called for a march on the capital Dhaka today in defiance of a nationwide curfew to pressure Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign.

The total death toll from anti-government protests in Bangladesh has reached at least 300 after 94 people were killed on Sunday, the highest daily death toll in weeks of protests, according to AFP.
Protests and violence erupted in Bangladesh last month after a group of students demanded the scrapping of a controversial quota system for government jobs. The protests evolved into a campaign to oust Hasina, who won a fourth consecutive term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition.
