Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on Tuesday at the request of leaders of the student protests that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Shibul Zaman, press secretary to the president of Bangladesh, said the president had dissolved parliament.
Bangladesh’s main police association said its members would go on strike “until every member of the police force is secured”.
Bangladesh army chief Garuzzaman announced on Monday that Sheikh Hasina had resigned and left the capital Dhaka by helicopter for neighbouring India.
The Bangladeshi president also ordered the release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and those arrested during the protests, and ordered the “immediate formation of an interim government”.
The protests in Bangladesh were sparked by the reintroduction of quotas in government jobs, which has made it difficult for many university graduates to find work.
