62 people killed in Brazilian plane crash

A plane on a domestic flight in Brazil crashed in the state of São Paulo on Friday 9th August 2024, with local authorities saying there were “no survivors” among the 62 people on board at the time of the tragedy, the causes of which are still unknown.

The plane was traveling from Cascavel in the southern state of Paraná to Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo when it crashed in Vinhedo.

Images broadcast by local media showed the plane plummeting at high speed, while others showed a long column of smoke rising from the crash site in a residential area.

“There are no survivors,” the Valinhos municipality, involved in the rescue operation in the neighboring town of Vinhedo, told AFP.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva lamented the tragedy at an official event in the country’s south and held a minute’s silence for the victims.
