Several forest fires broke out in Greece on Sunday, including in areas close to the capital, as a state of alert was declared across much of the country.

One fire broke out in the Varnavas region / about 35 kilometres northeast of Athens / where strong winds helped spread the blaze, prompting authorities to halt traffic and urge residents to evacuate the area.
