Thailand: Constitutional court rules to impeach prime minister

Thailand’s Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday to impeach Prime Minister Srita Tavisin for ‘violating ethical rules in forming the government’.

PBS World reported that Tavisin’s impeachment motion was based on his ‘illegal’ appointment of Pichit Chuenpan to the cabinet.

Chuenpan was jailed for six months in 2008 for attempting bribe to a judge in a land purchase .

The court approved Tavisin’s dismissal by a vote of five to four, noting that the current government will continue to function until a new prime minister is approved by parliament.

The Constitutional Court had accepted a petition signed by 40 senators to dismiss the prime minister.
