Colombia bans coal exports to Israel

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has signed a decree banning the export of coal to Israel in an attempt to pressure Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to end the conflict in Gaza.

Colombia is Israel’s largest supplier of coal.

The Colombian miners’ association warned that Colombia could not stop coal exports to Israel under the free trade agreement between the two countries, and that companies producing the mineral could consider taking action.

In May, Petro announced the severing of diplomatic relations between his country and Israel, describing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government as committing ‘genocide’ against the Palestinians. He also stopped buying Israeli weapons.
