The United Nations (UN) announced today that humanitarian aid has begun entering Sudan’s Darfur region through the Adra border crossing with Chad.
Justin Brady, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan, said in a blog post on the X platform: “Late Wednesday evening, after 15 trucks had passed through the crossing out of a total of 131 trucks at the border, the Sudanese government issued instructions to halt movements.”
Only a fraction of the aid available to Darfur residents has entered the famine-stricken region this week, he said, adding that there is enough food ready to move for 500,000 people.
More than six million people are food insecure in Darfur and more than 25 million people, about half the population, are food insecure.
