Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes on Friday ordered that social media platform X be blocked throughout Brazil after the company refused to name a legal representative in the country.
De Moraes gave the Elon Musk-owned platform 24 hours to appoint a legal representative. X closed its Brazilian office on August 17, claiming it had received threats to arrest its former legal representative.
X has been at odds with de Moraes for several months over the platform’s refusal to comply with court orders to remove accounts promoting coup-related content and undermining democracy.
Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court also ordered the platform to pay fines of up to 18 million reais (about $3.2 million) for non-compliance.
