Tunisia: Presidential candidate Ayachi Zemal jailed

A lawyer for Tunisian presidential candidate Ayachi Zemal said on Wednesday that Tunisian prosecutors have ordered his client’s detention pending trial.
The prosecutor’s office ordered Zemal’s detention in the case of falsifying popular endorsements against him.

Security forces had arrested the presidential candidate at dawn on Monday in the capital Tous in the same case.

The electoral law requires presidential candidates to collect 10 recommendations from voters in 10 electoral districts.
On Monday, the Tunisian Electoral Commission announced the final list of candidates for the presidential race, which included three candidates: incumbent President Kais Saied, Popular Movement Party leader Zuhair al-Maghzawi, and Azmoun Party leader Ayachi al-Zamal.
Tunisia’s presidential election will be held on October 6.
