A magnitude 6 earthquake struck an area near the northern coast of Papua New Guinea on Thursday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean about 300 kilometers east of the town of Vanimo, which is preparing to host Pope Francis this weekend.

No major damage was reported after the quake.
