A Swiss appeals court on Tuesday found the grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Tariq Ramadan guilty of rape and sexual assault in a Geneva hotel 15 years ago.
A Swiss appeals court overturned the acquittal of Tariq Ramadan, a prominent scholar of Islamic studies, on charges of rape and forcing a woman to have sex, Geneva’s local government said.
Tariq Ramadan was sentenced to three years in prison, one of which was suspended.
Ramadan denies the charges brought against him by a Swiss woman named Brigitte in connection with an incident that took place in a Geneva hotel in 2008.
Ramadan can appeal the verdict to a higher Swiss federal court.
