The Tajikistan Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the country’s Grand Mufti, Said Makram Abdulkodirzoda, was injured in an attack outside a major mosque in the capital, Dushanbe, today (Wednesday).
According to Reuters, the ministry stated that an individual with “disruptive motives” stabbed Abdulkodirzoda after he finished praying at one of the mosques.
The ministry mentioned that the Mufti sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital after a medical examination. Authorities have arrested the attacker and opened a criminal case regarding the incident.
Abdulkodirzoda, 61, has led the highest Islamic institution in the country, the Islamic Center of the Republic of Tajikistan, since 2010, according to his official biography. Tajikistan, a landlocked country with a population of about 10 million, is located between Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. Most Tajiks are Sunni Muslims following the Hanafi school of thought.
