Guinea Bissau President Embalo says he will not run for a second term

Guinea-Bissau’s President Omar Sissoko Impalo said Thursday he will not run for a second term in elections scheduled for November.

Impalo, 51, was elected in January 2020 to succeed outgoing President José Mario Vaz.

He defeated rival Domingos Simões Pereira with 54 percent of the vote and is eligible to run for a second term.

His unexpected announcement could create a power vacuum and further destabilize the coup-prone country of about 2 million people.

Impalo said at the end of a cabinet meeting Thursday that his wife had convinced him not to run again..
