On Tuesday, September 10, Chinese company Huawei Technologies unveiled a smartphone that folds three times, priced at $2,800, as part of its efforts to strengthen its position in the world’s largest smartphone market and steal the spotlight from Apple, just hours after the American company launched the latest version of the iPhone equipped with generative artificial intelligence.
Richard Yu, the head of the company’s consumer division, revealed the new model, named Mate X3, during an online conference from its headquarters in Shenzhen, southern China. The phones are set to go on sale on September 20.
Despite targeting a specific customer segment, more than 3 million people have already registered to receive notifications when the phone becomes available. According to research firm IDC, the total global market for foldable phones reached approximately 4 million units in the second quarter.
