15 killed and 22 regions declared state of emergency due to Peruvian fires

Peruvian authorities said on Monday that forest fires that have been raging since July have killed at least 15 people and destroyed more than 3,000 hectares of farmland and natural areas.
Prime Minister Gustavo Andrianz explained that the fires in Peru are caused by human activity and that 22 of the country’s 24 regions are experiencing active outbreaks.
He added that thick clouds, smoke, and winds hamper the work of aircraft dedicated to fighting the fires. Civil Defense reports indicate that the fires have killed at least 15 people and injured 98 others since July.
Of the dead, 10 people have died in the last two weeks, and more than 1,800 people have been directly injured. The livestock sector has also reported a loss of 334 animals.
