Sri Lanka’s prime minister resigns after Dissanayake wins presidency

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said on Monday he had resigned after Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the presidency in elections on the debt-ridden Indian Ocean island.
Gunawardena, 75, became prime minister in July 2022 after former president Gotabhaya Rajapaksa resigned and fled the country following widespread protests triggered by the worst economic crisis in decades.
Dissanayake defeated incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was appointed by parliament to run the country for the remainder of Rajapaksa’s term.

Media reported that Gunawardena had already tendered his resignation to President-elect Dissanayake.
