Argentine court orders arrest of Venezuelan president and government officials

An Argentine court on Monday ordered the arrest of a number of Venezuelan government officials, including President Nicolas Maduro, in a case of crimes against humanity.

The 20-page ruling by the Federal Court of Buenos Aires found that there was a systematic plan of repression, forced disappearances, torture, murder and persecution against part of the civilian population in Venezuela.

Yesterday, Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered the arrest of Argentine President Javier Meli, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and Carina Meli, the president’s sister and presidential adviser, on charges including money laundering.

Buenos Aires and Caracas have been at loggerheads since the disputed 28 July presidential election, which was marred by allegations of widespread voter fraud.
