Sri Lanka… President dissolves parliament and calls early elections in November

Sri Lanka’s new president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has dissolved parliament and called for early elections on 14 November.

The new president hopes the move will strengthen his position and allow him to better implement his policy goals.

Saturday’s presidential election was the first since the financial crisis hit the country two years ago, causing the economy to collapse due to an acute shortage of foreign currency.
