Canada: Trudeau government survives no-confidence vote

Yesterday Justin Trudeau’s minority Liberal government survived a Conservative motion of no confidence thanks to the support of the Bloc Québécois and the left-wing New Democratic Party.

The government’s survival was expected. Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet and New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh had indicated last week that they would not support Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s no-confidence motion.

In total, 211 MPs in the House of Commons voted against the no-confidence motion and 120 supported it.

The opposition parties in the House of Commons are expected to table a new motion of censure in the coming days.
