At least 15 people died when an illegal gold mine collapsed after a landslide caused by heavy rains, an official in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province said on Friday, as rescuers searched for seven missing people.
The illegal gold mine in Solok district collapsed after a landslide caused by heavy rains on Thursday night, said Erwan Effendi, head of the provincial disaster agency.
It took rescuers eight hours to reach the site, which has no roads leading to it, he told Reuters, adding that “the victims are local people who extract gold by hand”.
He estimated that about 25 people were in the mine at the time of the accident, of whom 15 died, three were injured and seven are missing.
