Austria’s far right wins historic election victory

The far-right won a historic victory in Austria’s general election on Sunday.

Herbert Kickl’s Freedom Party won 29.1 per cent of the vote, 13 points more than in the last election in 2019, according to projections with more than half the votes counted.

Kickl told public broadcaster ORF that the voters’ message was “very clear”, adding: We are reaching out to all parties,” he said, complaining that his constituents were being treated as “second-class citizens”.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer, leader of the ruling conservative People’s Party, expressed ‘disappointment’ at the defeat (26.3 per cent). We couldn’t catch up with the far right,’ he lamented to his supporters.
