Japan’s new prime minister sets 27 October for snap election

Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Monday that a snap election will be held on 27 October.

Ishiba will take over as prime minister from Fumio Kishida at an extraordinary session of parliament on Tuesday.

Ishiba recently won the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), defeating Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi.

He previously held several ministerial posts, including defence minister, and several senior posts within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
