Liberal Democratic Party leader elected prime minister of Japan

Shigeru Ishiba, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was elected prime minister by the House of Representatives today, succeeding Fumio Kishida as public confidence in politics wanes amid a troubled economy.

The ruling coalition-controlled lower house backed Ishiba, who was elected Liberal Democratic Party leader late last week, ahead of a similar vote in the upper house, paving the way for a snap election scheduled for 27 October.
