6.1 magnitude earthquake hits eastern Philippines

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the province of /Catanduanes/ in the eastern Philippines today.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the epicentre of the quake was 81 km from the town of /Pagamanoc/ in the province, at a depth of 350 km.

There have been no reports of casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where about 90 per cent of the world’s earthquakes occur.

The last major earthquake to hit the country measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and killed more than 220 people in the central Philippines in October 2013.
