Typhoon Krathun slammed into Taiwan’s southwestern coast, bringing strong winds and heavy rains, leaving thousands without power and closing the Taiwan Stock Exchange for a second day.
Krathun’s maximum sustained winds reached 126 kilometres per hour before making landfall in the Siao Gang area of Kaohsiung city, according to Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration, equivalent to a Category 1 typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson five-stage typhoon scale.
More than 84,000 customers are currently without power, according to Taiwan Power.
Taiwanese authorities said yesterday (Wednesday) that one person had died and others were injured as Typhoon Krathun approached.
