France is hosting the 19th Summit of the Francophonie today, Friday, and tomorrow, Saturday, at the Palais Javelin in Paris.
According to the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF), at least 55 heads of state and government will attend the summit, which will be chaired by France on Friday after two years of Tunisian presidency.
With France’s support, the OIF is working to attract more members. The organisation currently has 88 member states, including 54 full members, seven associate members and 27 observer states.
French is spoken by some 321 million people worldwide and is one of the five most widely spoken languages in the world (after English, Chinese, Hindi and Spanish).
