TikTok Cuts Hundreds of Jobs and Shifts Focus to AI for Content Moderation

TikTok announced the elimination of hundreds of jobs worldwide, particularly in Malaysia, while reallocating resources toward automated solutions like artificial intelligence for content moderation.
The company, owned by China’s ByteDance, did not provide specific details about the layoffs in each country, but it is expected that fewer than 500 jobs will be affected in Malaysia.
The company stated that it has “thousands of employees” across all continents and noted its intention to invest $2 billion in 2024 to enhance trust and security, with a goal of removing 80% of rule-violating content using automated technologies.
TikTok utilizes a combination of human moderators and automated monitoring tools to analyze and remove inappropriate content.
