United Nations: Nearly 3 million people have fled Sudan after 18 months of war

Nearly 3 million people have fled Sudan after 18 months of war, crossing borders to seek safety in neighbouring countries and beyond, mainly in the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan and Uganda, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Wednesday it was deeply concerned by the continued displacement of people due to conflict in several areas of Sudan.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimates that some 40,000 people were newly displaced within Sudan in the first half of October alone, amid escalating hostilities in some parts of the country at the end of the rainy season, bringing the total number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Sudan to nearly 8.2 million since the conflict began in April last year.
