European Union member states have backed a new legislative initiative aimed at “speeding up” the deportation of illegal migrants.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a new legislative proposal aimed at facilitating expulsions and strengthening cooperation between member states.
The initiative aims to make the expulsion process more efficient, in response to demands from several EU countries facing increasing challenges with irregular migration, notably Italy.

The move is part of a wider EU effort to improve migration policy, with European institutions focusing on striking a balance between protecting migrants’ rights and enforcing migration laws.
